Base Stats

Empoleon balances offense and defense well: 111 Special Attack and 101 Special Defense are backed by 84/88 physical bulk, with only the 60 Speed letting it down. The slow tempo means it either picks up Tailwind/Trick Room support or simply tanks hits and answers back off its excellent eleven-resistance Water/Steel typing.

Abilities

  • Torrent — boosts Water moves by 50% once HP drops below a third; a passive late-game spike.
  • Competitive — sharply raises Special Attack whenever a stat is lowered by the opponent. In doubles, where Intimidate, Icy Wind, Snarl and Spore are everywhere, this routinely hands Empoleon a free +2 Special Attack and turns a defensive pivot into a sudden threat.

Best Moveset

Empoleon's wide special movepool and great typing make it a flexible bulky attacker and support piece.

Bulky special attacker

  • Hydro Pump or Surf — Water STAB; Surf is the safer spread option in doubles.
  • Flash Cannon — Steel STAB that hits Fairies and Rocks.
  • Ice Beam — coverage for the Grass, Ground, Flying and Dragon-types that trouble Water.
  • Protect — doubles staple for scouting and stalling.

Support / utility

  • Flip Turn — momentum and pivoting, leaning on Empoleon's bulk to come back later.
  • Icy Wind — spread Speed control to compensate for its own slowness.
  • Stealth Rock or Defog — hazard control off a sturdy body.
  • Haze — resets stat boosts to undo opposing setup.

Other notable tools include Scald, Air Slash, Aqua Jet, Knock Off, Liquidation, Earthquake, Iron Defense and Helping Hand.

Suggested SP Spread

With the Champions SP system (66 points, max 32 per stat), Empoleon usually wants Special Attack plus HP and Special Defense to keep its bulky pivot identity, with a Special Defense or SpA Stat Alignment. A little Speed investment helps it sneak past other slow Pokemon before Icy Wind support kicks in. Tune the Level 50 numbers in the PikaChampions team builder.

Competitive Role in Regulation M-A

Empoleon's niche is the resilient special pivot that turns the opponent's disruption against them. Water/Steel resists a huge swath of common attacking types — eleven in total — so it can switch in repeatedly, and Competitive means any Intimidate, Snarl or Icy Wind aimed its way fuels a +2 Special Attack that suddenly threatens KOs with Hydro Pump and Ice Beam. It supports a team with Icy Wind speed control, hazards, and Flip Turn momentum while tanking special hits with 101 Special Defense. Its only real flaws are the 60 Speed and a 4× Water weakness reduced to manageable levels by its bulk; pairing it with Tailwind or Trick Room, or simply letting opponents make the mistake of lowering its stats, lets it shine.

Evolution Line

Piplup → Prinplup (Level 16) → Empoleon (Level 36). Empoleon does not Mega Evolve.
