Base Stats

Forretress's 140 Defense and Sturdy make it extremely hard to break on the physical side, though its 60 Special Defense and 40 Speed are weak points. It is a support Pokemon first, using its bulk to set up hazards and pivot.

Type Matchups

Weak to: Fire
Resists: Normal Ice Psychic Bug Dragon Steel Fairy Grass¼×
Immune to: Poison
Bug/Steel is a phenomenal defensive typing — Forretress resists a huge range of types and has only one weakness: a 4× weakness to Fire. Keep it away from Fire attacks and it walls almost everything else physically.

Abilities

  • Sturdy — survives any single hit from full HP with 1 HP, guaranteeing it gets to set a hazard or pivot.
  • Overcoat — immunity to weather chip and powder moves.

Best Moveset

Hazard setter / pivot

  • Stealth Rock — chip the opposing side on entry.
  • Spikes or Toxic Spikes — stack entry hazards.
  • Rapid Spin — clear hazards on your side (and a small Speed boost).
  • Volt Switch or Body Press — pivot or damage off Defense.

It also has Iron Head, Earthquake and Thunder Wave.

Suggested SP Spread

With the SP system, Forretress wants HP and Special Defense (its Defense is already enormous) with a bulky Stat Alignment, so it can take special hits too. Tune it in the team builder.

Competitive Role in Regulation M-A

Forretress is a defensive hazard setter and pivot. Sturdy guarantees it gets a turn to set Stealth Rock or Spikes, Rapid Spin keeps your own side clear, and Body Press turns its huge Defense into damage. Its lone (if severe) Fire weakness is the main thing to play around. A dependable support body for balance teams that want hazard control.

Evolution Line

Pineco → Forretress (Level 31). Forretress does not Mega Evolve.
