Gourgeist in Pokemon Champions: Stats, Best Moveset & How to Get
Gourgeist is a defensively-minded Ghost/Grass disruptor in Pokemon Champions with a standout 122 Defense and a toolkit built for stalling. Where its Phantump-line cousin Trevenant hits hard, Gourgeist leans on Will-O-Wisp, Leech Seed and Trick Room to grind opponents out from behind a thick physical wall. This guide covers Gourgeist's stats, type matchups, best moveset, an SP spread, its doubles role and how to get it.
Base Stats
Gourgeist's calling card is 122 Defense, making it a genuine physical wall, backed by 65 HP and 75 Special Defense. Its offenses are mediocre — 90 Attack and 58 Special Attack — so it earns its keep through disruption rather than damage. At 84 Speed it sits in a middle tier, but its slower stance and bulk make it just as comfortable under Trick Room.
| Form | HP | Atk | Def | SpA | SpD | Spe | BST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gourgeist | 65 | 90 | 122 | 58 | 75 | 84 | 494 |
Type Matchups
Abilities
- Pickup — can recover used items; mostly flavour in competitive play.
- Frisk — reveals an opponent's held item on entry; pure information.
- Insomnia — immunity to sleep, a genuinely useful ability that lets Gourgeist switch into Spore and Sleep Powder users without fear.
Best Moveset
Bulky disruptor
- Will-O-Wisp — burn physical attackers and lean on Gourgeist's wall to take the hits.
- Leech Seed — passive recovery and chip that keeps it healthy through long games.
- Poltergeist or Shadow Ball — Ghost STAB; Poltergeist if you want the bigger hit off its 90 Attack.
- Protect — stall a turn so Leech Seed and burn damage tick.
Trick Room support
- Trick Room — set the room from behind its bulk to enable slow partners.
- Grassy Glide — priority Grass STAB under Grassy Terrain.
- Nasty Plot + Energy Ball / Shadow Ball — a special set if you want Gourgeist to threaten damage as well as support.
Other tools include Synthesis for recovery, Foul Play, Dark Pulse, Sludge Bomb, Shadow Sneak for priority, Substitute and Tera Blast.
Suggested SP Spread
With the Champions SP system (66 points, max 32 per stat), Gourgeist wants to push its already-great physical wall further: invest in HP and Special Defense (Defense is already enormous) with a defensive Stat Alignment, so it covers both sides. A Nasty Plot variant can spare points for Special Attack. Tune the exact Level 50 numbers in the team builder.
Competitive Role in Regulation M-A
Gourgeist is a bulky disruptor whose niche is wearing teams down rather than blowing them up. Its 122 Defense and Insomnia let it switch into physical attackers and sleep-inducers alike, then it sets Will-O-Wisp and Leech Seed to chip the field while it stalls behind Protect. Ghost typing gives it Normal and Fighting immunities and the ability to threaten Ghost STAB, and its slow, durable profile makes it a natural Trick Room enabler that can also support partners directly. It will never out-damage the meta's hitters, but as a sticky, status-spreading wall — especially one that laughs at Spore — it fills a real support role on bulkier teams.
Evolution Line
Pumpkaboo → Gourgeist (trade). It comes in four sizes (Small, Average, Large, Super) that differ only in HP and Attack. Gourgeist does not Mega Evolve.
