Torkoal in Pokemon Champions: Stats, Best Moveset, Drought & How to Get

Torkoal is the premier sun setter in Pokemon Champions. Its Drought ability summons harsh sunlight the moment it switches in, powering up Fire-type partners and Chlorophyll sweepers, while its enormous 140 Defense lets it stick around to keep the sun up. This guide covers Torkoal's stats, type matchups, best moves, an SP spread, its role in Regulation M-A doubles, and how to get it.

Base Stats

Torkoal is built around one number: 140 Defense, which makes it a genuine physical wall. Its 85 Special Attack is enough to throw out a real Eruption, but its 70 HP and 70 Special Defense leave it vulnerable on the special side, and a glacial 20 Speed means it almost always moves last outside Trick Room.

Abilities

  • Drought — summons harsh sunlight on switch-in for five turns. This is the entire reason to run Torkoal: it boosts Fire moves by 50%, weakens Water moves, and doubles the Speed of Chlorophyll partners.
  • White Smoke — prevents the opponent from lowering Torkoal's stats. A solid utility option, but you almost always want Drought.
  • Shell Armor — blocks critical hits. Niche.

Best Moveset

Sun setter / support

  • Eruption — Fire STAB that, boosted by sun and fired at full HP, hits both opponents extremely hard.
  • Weather Ball — becomes a 100-power Fire move under its own sun, a reliable spread-free nuke.
  • Protect — keeps Torkoal alive to maintain sun and dodge spread damage.
  • Yawn or Will-O-Wisp — disruption and chip on a more supportive build.

It also offers Heat Wave (spread Fire), Earth Power and Stone Edge for coverage, Rapid Spin and Stealth Rock for hazard control, Iron Defense + Shell Smash for a setup gimmick, and Tera Blast.

Suggested SP Spread

With the Champions SP system (66 points, max 32 per stat), Torkoal usually invests in HP and Special Defense to patch its weaker side, leaning on its natural 140 Defense, with a defensive Stat Alignment. A more offensive sun lead can instead pump Special Attack for a bigger Eruption. Build it out in the team builder.

Competitive Role in Regulation M-A

Torkoal is the engine of sun teams. Drought instantly turns on the weather that Fire attackers and Chlorophyll sweepers like Venusaur or Lilligant rely on, and its 140 Defense means it survives long enough to keep that weather running. The trade-off is that it is passive on its own, slow, and badly exposed to the Water, Ground and Rock attacks that sun teams already fear, so it leans on Protect, redirection and fast partners that capitalise on the sun before it fades. As a one-Pokemon weather button it is irreplaceable on its archetype.

Evolution Line

Torkoal does not evolve and does not Mega Evolve — it stands alone as a single-stage Pokemon.

  • Roster Ranch recruitment — available during the Regulation M-A season (around April–June 2026); permanently recruitable with Teammate Tickets.
